An asynchronous video messaging system provides delivery by conventional telecommunications channels of video messages for storage and subsequent viewing. In one embodiment of the invention, the video messaging system contains an analog/digital video signal converter, a video format converter, and a microprocessor having memory on which a telecommunications software application resides and which controls a modem connected to the telecommunications network. Video messages are converted from analog to digital form, stored in memory, and an identification header is associated with it. The digital form of the video message is transmitted across the telecommunications network at a rate compatible with the channel transmission rate. On receipt from the telecommunications network, the message is stored along with its identifying information for subsequent viewing.
