Structural supporting elements of a building are interconnected by a connection system. The connection system is arranged so that yielding as a result of seismic activity is directed into the connecting system and so that earthquake energy is dissipated in the connecting system and the building is protected from damage. Thus, the connection system may have an element which has a yield strength that is less than the yield strength of the rest of the connecting system so that earthquake energy is dissipated in the element and the building is protected from damage. The structural supporting elements may be concrete elements, such as precast concrete elements, or may be steel elements.
