A skate boot is described in which cushioning pads are employed in the region of the skater's malleoli, the cushioning pad having an area of reduced thickness corresponding approximately in shape to the path followed by the malleoli relative to the overall structure of the foot as the ankle is flexed. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the skate boot includes a conventional outer, a plastic insert, the cushioning pads, and a lining. The cushioning pads preferably are of the type incorporating flowable gel-like material, the areas of reduced thickness being provided by sealed areas of the pads into which the flowable material cannot flow. The sealed area for the skater's medial malleolus follows a slightly curved but generally horizontal path, approximately one inch long, and the sealed area for the skater's lateral malleolus follows a generally straight path angling upwardly from rear to front, approximately 3/4 inch long.
