Dans un système de transmission un circuit de commande (4) reçoit une séquence binaire d'entrée (T) représentant des données à transmettre. Il code cette séquence selon un code à alternance de phase qui se distingue du code duobinaire à inversion de phase par le fait que les déphasages appliqués à une onde porteuse sont inférieurs à 90 degrés. Une plaquette semiconductrice (3) inclut pour cela un émetteur laser et un modulateur à électroabsorption à deux sections. Elle engendre ladite onde porteuse et elle la module selon la séquence codée. Une fibre optique (54) transmet l'onde modulée. Et une diode détectrice (58) reçoit l'onde transmise et en discrimine l'intensité pour restituer la séquence binaire d'entrée.
