The invention concerns a system and method enabling the copying of documents. It has specific application to the archiving and retrieval, and the scanning and reproduction, of documents which are or which may be capable of interacting with a computer system or network. Such a document has coded data printed on it allowing it to interact with the computer system or network by use of a sensing device operated by a user. Specifically, the method involves scanning a document which may contain both document information and coded data indicative of an identity of the document, forming a digital image of the document, and detecting, if the document contains said coded data indicative of the identity of the document, the coded data. If the document does contain such coded data, stored data representing the content of the document is accessed, and, depending on the operating instructions, either a copy of the document is printed, together with coded data indicative of an identity of the copy being printed on the copy, or data representing a copy of the document is stored, the stored data including a unique identifier for said copy. The invention can be employed for the printing of documents, the archiving and retrieval of documents, and the scanning and reproduction of documents. In copying documents, it can be used to produce pages of far higher quality than those produced by conventional photocopying means, often irrespective of the physical quality of the page to be copied.
L'invention concerne un système et un procédé de copie de documents et est notamment utile dans l'archivage et l'extraction, le balayage et la reproduction de documents, lesquels peuvent interagir avec un système ou réseau informatique, ou sont susceptibles d'une telle interaction. Sur un tel document, des données sont imprimées, qui permettent une interaction entre le document et le système ou réseau informatique, par l'intermédiaire d'un dispositif de détection commandé par un utilisateur. Ce procédé consiste notamment à balayer un document, lequel peut contenir à la fois des informations de documents et des données codées indiquant l'identité du document, à former une image numérique du document et à détecter des données codées, si ce document contient des données codées indiquant son identité. Si tel est le cas, il est accédé aux données stockées représentant le contenu du document, et en fonction des instructions de commande, soit une copie du document est imprimée, en même temps que les données codées indiquant l'identité de la copie en cours d'impression sur le support, soit des données représentant une copie du document sont stockées, qui comprennent un identificateur unique de la copie. On peut employer cette invention pour imprimer, archiver et extraire, balayer et reproduire des documents. Lors de la copie de documents, on peut utiliser l'invention pour produire des pages de bien meilleure qualité que celles produites au moyen de dispositifs de photocopie classiques, souvent peu respectueux de la qualité de la page à copier.
