An optical fiber optically connectable to a semiconductor LD which is a light- emitting device with a high optical coupling efficiency. To an end of an optical fiber (1) to be optically connected to a semiconductor LD (3), an optical fiber (5) for optical coupling efficiency improvement is bonded by a fusion splice technique. The diameter (W1) of the circular mode field (2) of the optical fiber (5) is approximately equal to the mode field diameter along the major axis of the ellipse of the elliptic mode field of the semiconductor LD (3). The end of the optical fiber (5) on the semiconductor LD (3) side has a generally wedgelike shape and comprises a lens at the tip. Thus, the efficiency of the optical coupling between the semiconductor LD (3) and the optical fiber (5) is high, and therefore the efficiency of the optical coupling between the optical fiber (1) and the semiconductor LD (3) is improved through the optical fiber (5) irrespective of the size of the mode field diameter (w) of the optical fiber (1).

L'invention porte sur une fibre optique se raccordant à une DEL à semi-conducteur avec une grande efficacité de couplage optique. Pour améliorer le rendement du couplage optique, l'une des extrémités de la fibre optique (1) à raccorder à la DEL (3) l'est par épissure par fusion. Le diamètre (W1) de champ (2) de mode circulaire de la fibre optique (5) est sensiblement égal au diamètre de champ de mode le long du grand axe de l'ellipse du champ de mode elliptique de la DEL à semi-conducteur (3). L'extrémité de la fibre optique (5) du côté de la DEL à semi-conducteur, sensiblement en forme de coin, est munie d'une lentille. De ce fait le rendement du couplage optique entre la fibre optique (5) et la DEL (3) est élevé, et celui du couplage optique entre la fibre optique (1) et la DEL (3) est amélioré à travers la fibre optique (5), indépendamment de la taille du diamètre (w) de champ de mode de la fibre optique (1).
