This lighting system comprises an incandescent lamp energizable from a source of a.c. voltage and an infrared sensing device sensitive to the presence near said device of an intruder for producing an output signal in response to such presence. Means responsive to the output signal causes the power supplied from the source to the lamp to be higher when the output signal from the sensing device indicates the presence of an intruder than is the power supplied from the source when the sensing device indicates there is no intruder present. Means effective during periods of darkness causes the incandescent lamp to be energized from the a.c. source at a relatively low power level compared to the full-brightness power level when the sensing device indicates no intruder is present.
