A lubricant containing a minor amount of a polyalkene-substituted succinimide of Mn 1800 to 2800, as a first base, is circulated through a lubricating system so that the succinimide forms salts with at least a portion of combustion acids therein. The lubricant is then contacted with an immobilised second base, stronger than the first base, that displaces at least a portion of the succinimide from the salts to form retained second base:combustion acid salts and release the succinimide into the lubricant.

L~invention concerne un lubrifiant contenant une quantité mineure d'un succinimide substitué par un polyalcène et ayant une masse moléculaire moyenne en nombre (Mn) de 1800 à 2800, en tant que première base. On fait circuler ledit lubrifiant à travers un système de lubrification de sorte que le succinimide forme des sels avec au moins une partie des acides de combustion dans celui-ci. Le lubrifiant est ensuite mis en contact avec une seconde base immobilisée, plus forte que la première base, qui déplace au moins une partie du succinimide des sels pour former des sels retenus entre la seconde base et les acides de combustion et relarguer le succinimide dans le lubrifiant.
