The invention relate to a process for improving the resistance to corrosion in water or zirconium and zirconium alloys. According to said process, to the zirconium or zirconium alloy is added at least one metallic element able to stabilize the tetragonal phase of zirconia, e.g. 2 to 10% by weight of cerium. The thus modified alloys can be used as structural elements or as a can or sheath for a fuel element in nuclear reactors.
