The invention relates to a method for producing low-odor, hydrogel-forming polymers based on acrylic acid. Said method comprises the following steps: a) a polymeric hydrogel is produced by radically polymerizing a monomer composition containing at least 50 percent by weight of acrylic acid in an aqueous polymerizing medium, and the hydrogel is transformed into a particle- shaped hydrogel or a powder forming a hydrogel; and optionally b) the particle- shaped hydrogel or the powder forming a hydrogel is treated with a crosslinking substance comprising at least two functional groups that are reactive towards the carboxyl groups of the polymer, optionally in a latent form. The inventive method is characterized by the fact that the acrylic acid used in step a) comprises a total amount of oligomers of less than 500 ppm, preferably no more than 400 ppm, and especially no more than 300 ppm, ppm referring to proportions by weight relative to the acrylic acid. Advantageously, the proportion of triacrylic acid (compound I in which x = 2) and higher oligomers of the acrylic acid amounts to less than 100 ppm, especially less than 50 ppm, and particularly less than 10 ppm.
La présente invention concerne un procédé pour produire un polymère formant un hydrogel peu odorant à base d'acide acrylique. Ce procédé consiste a) à produire un hydrogel polymère par polymérisation radicalaire d'une composition de monomère contenant au moins 50 % en poids d'acide acrylique, dans un milieu de polymérisation aqueux, à transformer l'hydrogel en un hydrogel sous forme de particules ou en une poudre formant un hydrogel, puis éventuellement b) à traiter l'hydrogel sous forme de particules ou la poudre formant un hydrogel avec une substance de réticulation qui présente au moins deux groupes fonctionnels, réactifs par rapport aux groupes carboxyle du polymère, éventuellement sous forme latente. Cette invention est caractérisée en ce que l'acide acrylique utilisé dans l'étape a) présente une teneur totale en oligomères d'acide acrylique inférieure à 500 ppm, de préférence inférieure ou égale à 400 ppm, notamment inférieure ou égale à 300 ppm. Ici et à la suite, toutes les indications en ppm sont des parties en poids par rapport à l'acide acrylique. Il est avantageux d'avoir une teneur en acide triacrylique (composé I avec x = 2) et en oligomères supérieurs de l'acide acrylique s'élevant à moins de 100 ppm, notamment moins de 50 ppm, en particulier moins de 10 ppm.
