There is disclosed an apparatus for suturing tissue comprising: a) first and second arms; b) a first jaw supported by the first arm and a second jaw supported by the second arm, the jaws being relatively movable between an open and closed position; c) a first needle securing member movably positioned in the first jaw and a second needle securing member movably positioned in the second jaw; d) a reciprocating mechanism for moving the first and second needle securing members between a needle securing and a needle release position; and e) a retaining mechanism for preventing separation of the first and second jaws during relative movement of the arms to a closed position.
