A device for roping an animal, including calves for example, is provided to be used in combination with an all terrain type vehicle. The device includes an elongate telescoping pole arranged to be mounted on a supporting surface of the vehicle for pivotal movement about a longitudinal axis and a lateral axis of the vehicle to position a free end of the pole. First and second clamping members are mounted spaced apart adjacent the free end of the pole for supporting a rope having a lasso formed at a looped end thereof. Each of the first and second clamping members are arranged to release the rope therefrom when the rope is pulled by a force which exceeds a prescribed holding force of the clamping member. The device is particularly useful for roping calves by positioning the lasso over the neck of the calf while remaining seated on an all terrain vehicle. The releasable clamp minimise possible injury to the calf once it is caught in the lasso.
