This invention relates to a method for determining direction and relative magnitude of maximum horizontal stress in sedimentary basins within Earth's crust. In particular the method uses seismic reflection data in determining the direction and magnitude of stresses. The method involves identifying from seismic data faults which cut the upper continental crust and uses those faults in conjection with globally simultaneous compressional structures such as anticline to map the horizontal stresses. The invention has a particular application in the hydrocarbon exploration and production industry and has the advantage of providing the results pre-drill.
L'invention concerne un procédé servant à déterminer la direction et la magnitude relative de contrainte horizontale maximum dans des bassins sédimentaires de la croûte terrestre. Le procédé concerne notamment l'utilisation de données de réflexion sismique dans la détermination de la direction et de la magnitude des contraintes. Le procédé identifie parmi les erreurs de données sismiques laquelle coupe la partie supérieure de la croûte continentale et utilise ces erreurs de façon sensiblement simultanée conjointement avec des structures de compression, telles qu'un pli anticlinal afin de dresser une carte des contraintes horizontales. Cette invention possède une application particulière dans la prospection des gisements d'hydrocarbures et dans l'industrie de la production et présente l'avantage de fournir les résultats avant le forage.
