A pneumatic pump (50) comprises two coaxial cylindrical pumping chambers (60, 62), each enclosing a piston (54, 56) connected to the other through a partition (58) by a tube (64), thereby forming a monolithic piston assembly that is driven axially by a common electrical actuator (68) providing reciprocating motion. The volume in the bottom chamber is selected as needed to provide the desired pressure in the left ventricle (34) of an artificial heart (30) driven by the pump (50). The diameter of the tube (64) connecting the pistons (54, 56) is selected such that the stroke volume of the top chamber (60) is reduced with respect to that of the bottom chamber (62) as needed to match the reduced pressure requirements of the right ventricle (32) of the artificial heart. Check valves (74, 76, 78, 80) are used in each chamber to ensure venting of excess pressure during the blood ejection phase and to limit the vacuum during the fill phase.

La présente invention concerne une pompe pneumatique (50) comprenant deux chambres de pompage cylindriques coaxiales (60, 62). Chaque chambre renferme un piston (54, 56) relié à l'autre à travers une partition (58) par un tube (64), formant ainsi un ensemble piston monolithique entraîné axialement par un organe de commande électrique commun (68) qui procure un mouvement de va-et-vient. Le volume dans la chambre de fond est sélectionné en fonction des besoins, pour procurer la pression désirée dans le ventricule gauche (34) d'un cur artificiel (30) entraîné par la pompe (50). Le diamètre du tube (64) raccordé aux pistons (54, 56) est sélectionné de manière à ce que le volume systolique de la chambre supérieure (60) soit réduit par rapport à celui de la chambre de fond (62) suivant les besoins, afin de correspondre aux nécessités de pression réduite du ventricule droit (32) du cur artificiel. Des clapets de non-retour (74, 76, 78, 80) sont utilisés dans chaque chambre pour garantir la ventilation de la pression en excès durant la phase d'éjection de sang et pour limiter le vide durant la phase de remplissage.
