A method (310) of placing a call utilizing a telephone translator (110) having the steps of: A) lifting (312), by a caller, a telephone hand set (114) having a speaker (22) electrically connected to a translator microchip (20) and a microphone (24) electrically connected to the translator microchip (20); B) dialing (314) a recipients telephone number on a telephone keypad (118) positioned on an exterior of a telephone housing (112); C) first activating (316) an OUT button (16B) which is electrically connected to the translator microchip (20) contained with the telephone housing (112); D) second activating (318) a recipient's native language translation button which is electrically connected to the translator microchip (20); E)speaking (320), caller's native language words into the microphone (24); F)translating (322) the caller's native language words into the recipient's language words by the translator microchip (20); G) first sending (324) the translated recipient's language words to a telephone electronic circuitry (116) which is electrically connected to the translator microchip (20); and H) second sending (326) the translated recipient's language words to a recipient telephone via a telephone line (120) which is electrically connected thereto. A method (510) of utilizing a portable translator (210) powered by a battery (220) is also described and claimed herein.
