A mechanical practice steer has a representation of a steer mounted on a cover over a main frame of a vehicle on which the representation is mounted for carrying the representation across the ground to simulate movement of a steer. The vehicle is driven by two endless tracks each on a respective side of the main frame where the tracks are driven by two separate engines each having a constantly variable transmission driven thereby and each acting to drive a respective one of the tracks through the respective transmission. A remote control device is operable to separately control the speed of each of the engines. The cover includes a skirt over the tracks and the frame carries two rear legs which can pivot up and down on springs or driven by an actuator to simulate the rear legs of the steer for roping.
