An improved seat belt gripping device is provided for clamping and locking the shoulder portion and lap portion of a seat belt together in order to adequately secure a child safety seat in place on a car seat. The device is tamper-resistant so that children will not be able to remove the device while in use and further the device is easy to use. The safety device eliminates the need for removing slack from the shoulder portion of the seat belt in order to ensure that the child safety seat will not move in a forward direction during a sudden stop, collision or normal traffic maneuver. The safety device features a C-shaped plate which includes two fingers. A removable middle finger is mounted between the two fingers to create an E-shaped configuration. Each finger of the C-shaped plate has a slot on its underside between the ends of the finger. The slots are dimensioned to accommodate the shoulder and lap portions of the seat belt, which extend transversely across the undersides of the two fingers. The middle finger may be mounted to the C-shaped plate by way of a threaded pin extending upward from the middle finger and a child-proof knob which threads on the pin. The user places the two adjacent seat belt portions over the middle finger and below the two fingers. The child-proof knob is then used to tighten and lock the C-shaped plate and the middle finger together thereby clamping the shoulder portion and the lap portion of the seat belt together.
