This invention is directed to a process for preparing a compound of the formula Image ; wherein X is Image . The process utilizes 2-3 equivalents of a borane reducing agent and is run in the presence of a chiral oxazoborolidine catalyst. The product of this stereoselective reduction is a chiral alcohol which is useful in the synthesis of certain potent thiazolidine-2,4-dione hypoglycemic compounds.
