ABSTRACT The invention relates to a safety sheath for syringe needles. The sheath (5) has a closed end and an open end where retaining means (6) are provided for engaging and safely retaining the hub (3) of a needle (4) when the needle (4) is inserted and forced into the sheath (5). The sheath (5) is externally provided at its closed end with a support base (7,8) upon which the sheath can stand with its open end facing upwardly, thus enabling insertion of a used needle (4) into the sheath (5) without any risk of the syringe user to incur a self inflicted accidental puncture.
