Method and apparatus for detecting far end speech in a telephone apparatus. A speaker (14) reproduces far end sound from a far end signal, when received by the telephone apparatus. A microphone (12) generates a near end signal from near end sound, for transmission from the telephone apparatus. A hybrid (24) which passes the near and far end signals from an external two wire link (30) to and from the speaker and microphone, on respective first and second paths (1, 2) of a four wire link (28). Muting of the near end signal is effected when signal derived from the first path (1) of the four wire link (28) is detected as being representative of a condition of existence of far end signal. Signal determined as representing sidetone signal deriving from the near end signal from the speaker (14), and appearing in the signal on the first path (1) of the four wire link (28), pursuant to traverse of part of near the end signal through the hybrid, is subtracted from the signal derived from the first path (1) of the four wire link (28). Existence of the condition of existence of far end signal is then determined on the basis of the result of the subtraction.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de détection de parole à l'extrémité distante dans un appareil téléphonique. Un haut-parleur (14) reproduit le son de l'extrémité distante à partir d'un signal d'extrémité distante, lors de sa réception par l'appareil téléphonique. Un microphone (12) génère un signal de l'extrémité rapprochée, destiné à être transmis à partir de l'appareil téléphonique. Un hybride (24) qui achemine les signaux d'extrémité rapprochée et d'extrémité distante à partir d'un liaison à deux fils externe (30) entre le haut parleur et le microphone, sur des premier et deuxième voies (1, 2) d'une liaison à quatre fils (28). On effectue une insensibilisation du signal d'extrémité rapprochée lors de la détection du signal en provenance de la première voie (1) de la liaison à quatre fils (28) comme représentatif de la condition de l'existence d'un signal d'extrémité distante. Le signal détecté comme représentatif d'un signal d'effet local en provenance du signal d'extrémité rapprochée à partir du haut-parleur (14), et se produisant dans le signal de la première voie (1) de la liaison à quatre lignes (28), suite au passage de la partie du signal d'extrémité rapprochée à travers l'hybride, est soustrait du signal en provenance d la première voie (1) de la liaison à quatre fils (28). On détermine alors l'existence de la condition d'existence de signal d'extrémité distante sur la base du résultat de la soustraction.
