Methods of controlling the brightness of a glow discharge which switches from a low brightness state to a high brightness state a given time after the start of an excitation pulse are described. In the first method, conventional pulse duration modulation produces a dimming ratio much greater than the ratio of duty factor variation. In the second method, a plurality of sets of pulses having different fixed durations but variable repetition rates are employed. In the third method, a plurality of sets of pulses having different relative durations have their pulse durations modulated in synchrony.

Cette invention concerne des procédés de commande de la luminosité d'une décharge luminescente qui passe d'un état de faible luminosité à un état de luminosité vive après un temps donné faisant suite au départ d'une impulsion d'excitation. Dans un premier procédé, la modulation de la durée d'une impulsion traditionnelle produit un rapport de gradation bien plus important que le rapport de variation du facteur d'utilisation. Dans un deuxième procédé, plusieurs ensembles d'impulsions ayant des durées fixes mais des fréquences de répétition variables sont utilisés. Dans un troisième procédé, enfin, les durées des impulsions de plusieurs ensembles d'impulsions ayant des durées relatives différentes, sont modulées de manière synchrone.
