Bacteria containing eukaryotic and/or viral genes, and often having highly pleiomorphic morphology, are obtained by culturing virally-infected eukaryotic cells under aseptic, low oxygen conditions. The bacteria so produced express products encoded by the eukaryotic genes. Analyses indicate that several isolates obtained from culturing retrovirally-infected human brain capillary endothelial cells express human-specific genes previously mapped to widely separated human chromosomes.

On obtient des bactéries contenant des gènes eucaryotes et/ou viraux se caractérisant souvent par une morphologie fortement pléimorphique, en cultivant des cellules eucaryotes infectées par virus dans des conditions d'aseptie, dans un milieu pauvre en oxygène. Les bactéries produites de cette manière expriment des produits codés par les gènes eucaryotes. Les analyses indiquent que plusieurs isolats obtenus par culture de cellules endothéliales capillaires de cerveau humain infectées par rétrovirus expriment des gènes spécifiques de l'homme précédemment cartographiés sur des chromosomes humains à espacement important.
