A timing belt tensioner (10) for a motor vehicle engine (13) comprising a pivot (12) that is fixed relative to the mo-tor vehicle egine (13). A ten-sioner arm (16) is mounted for pivotal movement on the pivot (12). The tensioner arm (16) has a friction surface (22) dis-posed in friction sliding rela-tion with an adjacent surface (24) during the pivotal move-ment. A belt engaging pul-ley (26) is mounted for rota-tion on the tensioner arm (16). A spring (30) coupled with the tensioner arm (16) biases the arm in a direction tending to force the pulley (26) into ten-sioning engagement with the belt when the tensioner is in-stalled on the motor vehicle en-gine (13). The spring (30) bi-asing the arm (16) into a work-ing position maintains a pre-determined range of tension in the belt during dynamic operat-ing equilibrium of the belt. An anti-kickback mechanism (40) is coupled with the arm and stops instantaneous kickback movement of the arm (16) against the belt tensioning direction beyond when the arm (16) is instantaneously moved away from the working position against the belt-tensioning direction in response to instantaneous tightening of the belt. The anti-kickback mechanism (40) adjusts a location of the stop position based upon the working position of the arm (16).

L'invention concerne un tendeur (10) à courroie crantée d'un moteur (13) de véhicule automobile comprenant un axe (12) fixe par rapport audit moteur. Un bras (16) de tendeur est monté pivotant autour de l'axe. Ledit bras (16) présente une surface (22) de frottement placée dans un rapport de frottement coulissant avec une surface (24) adjacente pendant le mouvement pivotant. Une poulie (26), en prise avec la courroie, est montée tournante autour du bras (16) du tendeur. Un ressort (30) couplé avec ledit bras sollicite ce dernier dans une direction qui amène la poulie en contact avec la courroie de façon à la mettre sous tension lorsque le tendeur est installé sur le moteur (13) du véhicule automobile. Le ressort, qui sollicite le bras (16) dans une position de travail, maintient une gamme de tension prédéterminée dans la courroie pendant son équilibrage fonctionnel dynamique. Un mécanisme (40) antirecul, couplé au bras, arrête le mouvement de recul instantané du bras (16) contre la direction de tension de la courroie au delà d'un point où le bras (16) s'éloigne instantanément de la position de travail contre la direction de tension de la courroie en réaction au serrage instantané de la courroie. Ledit mécanisme (40) règle l'emplacement de la position d'arrêt en fonction de la position de travail du bras (16).
