A method is disclosed for distributing piracy-protected software that limits illicit copying of computer software. A user provides to a software provider some biometric information. The software provider receives the biometric information and packages data based on the biometric information into one of an installation software application, a software application for use by the user, and a registration file associated with the software application. The package containing the data based on the biometric information is sent to the user for installation and/or execution. When the user executes the software application, the user is prompted for biometric information and when the biometric information provided is that of an authorised user of the software, a user whose biometric information is packaged according to the invention, normal software execution continues.
