A spinal implant system includes a pair of spinal rods (40) arranged on opposite sides of the spinous processes of a pa- tient. A transverse connector assembly includes a plate (32) having a central portion (33) which spans between the spinal rods (40). At each end of the central portion (33) is an integral body portion (50) having an elongated slot (51) formed therein. An eye- bolt extending through the slot and has an opening to receive the spinal rod (40) therethrough to clamp the spinal rod to a respec- tive one of the body portions. At the end of each body portion is an enlarged end piece (55) having an end face (56) oriented gen- erally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the slot in the plate body (50). A threaded post (58) extends from the end face (56) and is used together with a nut (60) to clamp the yoke portion of the vertebral fixation element to the plate.
