In order to reach deeper lying objects in a loose pile of objects it is usually necessary to start by removing objects lying side by side or on top of each other, which are in the way. This problem also affects the organized and compact storage of storage media, such as CDs and the like. The storage system enables simple and direct access to randomly arranged storage devices located deep inside the system. This is achieved with drawer cases that can be stacked side by side or on top of each other and that accept extendable drawers for the data storage media. The direction of insertion of the data storage medium into the drawer is at right angles to the direction along which the drawer slides into the drawer case. Due to the fact that the storage of the individual flat data storage media is parallel to the axis for pushing in the drawers, the end of a storage cell extending in depth is of minimal area. This structure guarantees optimal utilization of the available space.
