ABSTRACT Rescue appliance for lowering persons from or out of buildings, with a frame (2), in which as single functionally effective constructional element, there is provided a rope pulley (5), over which a rope (5) runs in a groovelike guide with a looping angle of less than 360°. The width of which guide reduces conically towards the base of the guide at an angle causing self-locking, to a dimension which corresponds to only a fraction of the thickness of the rope (8). The rope pulley (5) co-operates with a stationary clamping gear in such a manner that a rotation of the rope pulley (5) is possible in the one direction of rotation, thereagainst is prevented in the other direction of rotation independently of the tension force, thus independently of the weight of the person concerned.
