Process for optical authentication of media and elements applying the said process. Process for authentication of solid or liquid media. Incorporated into the media are particles of an organic compound capable of absorbing or reflecting infrared or near-infrared radiation and the transparent or opaque state of which can be inverted irreversibly by heating to a temperature greater than the ambient temperature or by ultraviolet radiation. The opaque or non-opaque state of the particles is then determined.
