Water-dilutable etherified melamine-formaldehyde resins obtained by reacting melamine, formaldehyde, a compound having anionic groups and an etherification alcohol in a mixing ratio of melamine:formaldehyde:compound having anionic group:etherification alcohol of 1:(1.7 to 7.0):(0.01 to 0.4):(10 to 30) in the reaction mixture, are prepared in a multistage process and are used for preparing impregnates, especially glass fibre fleece and in paper coating.
