A system monitors the distance between a first and a second magnetically conductive part which are movable relative to one another, such as a knife (24) of a rotating cutter drum and a shearbar (12) of a harvesting machine. The system includes permanent magnets and induction coils which generate an electric signal corresponding to the distance therebetween. The permanent magnets are spatially separated from and exterior with respect to the induction coils, and the permanent magnet is spaced apart from a cutting surface of the shearbar on an outer surface of the shearbar.
