A polypeptide from the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich family, termed Sp.alpha. herein, as well as polynucleotides encoding Sp.alpha. and methods of recombinantly producing the same, are disclosed. In addition, antibodies reactive with Sp.alpha. are provided, as are methods of using antibodies that bind to Sp.alpha. for modulating the interaction between Sp.alpha. and its receptor. Immunoassay kits containing the anti-Sp.alpha. antibodies are also provided.
