A method and apparatus for dispensing weights is disclosed. The apparatus includes a feed mechanism for feeding in a stock such as weighted lead tape. A calibrator is provided to calibrated a measured property of said stock to a desired property such as weight. There is also provided a measuring device, such as an optical sensor to measure the amount of stock being fed into the machine. A PLC is used to keep track of the measured amount, compare it to the desired amount as determined from the calibration, and to initiate a cutting sequence when the desired amount equals the measured amount. In the preferred form of the invention the measurement takes place by means of an optical sensor which may measure the length of stock fed into the device either directly or indirectly.
