This invention relates to an impact actuated tool (10) for driving a fastener (30) by an explosive charge, particularly a tool (10) having a housing (12) witha barrel (16) axially slidably mounted within the front end. A nosepiece (34) is fixed to the front of the barrel (16) with a muzzle (28) at its front end forreceiving a fastening element that is to be secured in a ceiling or the like. A piston (20) is slidably mounted within the bore in the barrel (16). The barrel (16) is biased forwardly in the firing direction. At the rear of the tool (10) ahandle (50) engages a firing pin (26) which is biased rearwardly towards the back end of the tool (10). One embodiment of the tool (10) includes a ball lock safety device (90) to allow discharge only when the muzzle (28) of the tool (10) is pointed in an upward direction. The tool (10) is fired by impactingthe nosepiece (34) against a surface to effect displacement of the barrel (16) and firing pin (26) against their respective biasing means.
