ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a process for the production of phosphorous acid of high purity by reacting gaseous phosphorus and steam in a gas plasma to form predominantly phosphorus trioxide and then quenching the phosphorus trioxide with water before it has the opportunity to decompose. The phosphorus tri- oxide itself may be recovered by rapidly quenching the phosphorus trioxide to a stable temperature using an inert quenching medium in place of water. The present invention also relates to a corrosion-free anode for a plasma torch which is used in the production of phos- phorous acid.
