Described is a composition with integral intumescence properties, the composition being obtained by combining: a) one or more aminoformaldehyde resins and b) a mixture of mono- and di-esters of orthophosphoric acid with one or more polyols, the average hydroxy-group content of the polyols being at least 40% by wt., the molar ratio of mono-ester to di-ester not exceeding 12:1 and the phosphorous content of the mixture being at least 10% by wt.
