A transcoder has a decoder fo decoding a received video signal which has been coded according to a first coding scheme employing motion compensation and carries coded data and motion compensation information, and an encoder for encoding the output of the decoder according to a second coding scheme also employing motion compensation. The transcoder generates estimated motion vectors for a current frame of the video signal, using vectors which, in the received signal, accompany at least one other frame of the video signal. These may be used directly by the encoder or used to define a search area for motion estimation.
Le transcodeur de l'invention comprend un décodeur pour décoder un signal vidéo reçu codé suivant une première configuration de codage utilisant une technique de compensation de mouvement, et comporte des données codées et des informations de compensation de mouvement. Le transcodeur comprend aussi un codeur pour coder la sortie du décodeur suivant une deuxième configuration de codage utilisant également une technique de compensation de mouvement. Le transcodeur génère des vecteurs de mouvement estimé pour une trame courante du signal vidéo et, pour ce faire, met en oeuvre des vecteurs qui, dans le signal reçu, accompagnent au moins une autre trame du signal vidéo. Ces vecteurs peuvent être utilisés directement par le codeur, ou mis en oeuvre pour délimiter une zone de recherche permettant une estimation de mouvement.
