A pilot coater for applying a coating on a moving web sample is formed by a backup roll, a transfer roll and a coating flow metering system metering coating flow onto the transfer roll. A pneumatic actuating system holds the transfer roll in a ready position until a sensor detects a specific portion of the web is moving into a nip found between the backing roll and transfer roll and triggers movement of the transfer roll and coating metering system to move to a coating position with the transfer roll pressed onto the paper supported on the backing roll. After a preselected period of time, the transfer roll is moved from the paper to terminate the coating operation.

La coucheuse comporte un contre-rouleau, un rouleau de transfert et un système de mesure du débit d'application de la couche sur le rouleau de transfert. Un système d'actionnement pneumatique maintient le rouleau de transfert en position d'attente jusqu'à ce qu'un capteur détecte l'arrivée d'une partie spécifique de la bande à une ligne de contact entre le contre-rouleau et le rouleau de transfert. Il déclenche ensuite le mouvement du rouleau de transfert et du système de mesure de l'application de la couche pour passer à une position d'application de la couche, dans laquelle le rouleau de transfert s'appuie fortement contre le papier soutenu par le contre-rouleau. Après une période de temps présélectionnée, le rouleau de transfert s'éloigne du papier pour terminer l'application de la couche.
