It is a general object of the present invention to provide methods of administering .alpha.1-antitrypsin dry powder pulmonarily to a patient. The methods of the present invention generally provide enhanced persistence of .alpha.1-antitrypsin in critical tissues of the lower respiratory tract. These methods are generally useful in the treatment of .alpha.1-antitrypsin deficiency and the functional derangements of emphysema.
