2106595 9216606 PCTABS00016 In a process for producing fatty alcohol sulphate pastes, a mixture containing a) unsaturated fatty alcohols of formula R1-OH , wherein R1 stands for a linear unsaturated hydrocarbon residue containing 16 to 22 carbon atoms and 1, 2 or 3 double bonds, and b) saturated fatty alcohols of formula R2-OH, wherein R2 stands for a linear or branched saturated hydrocarbon residue containing 12 to 22 carbon atoms, is reacted with a mixture of sulphur trioxide and an inert gas in a molar ratio of 1 : 1.05 to 1 : 1.3 and the reaction products are neutralized and hydrolysed in one step at temperatures of 50 to 90 ·C with a quantity of aqueous base sufficient to yield aqueous fatty alcohol sulphate pastes with a solids content of 60 to 75 wt. %, referred to the paste, which have a viscosity less than 10 Pa.s at a temperature of 60 ·C.
