A digital content remote access and playback chip comprising of a digital signal processor and a microprocessor. The digital signal processor and microprocessor are used for downloading user-selected digital data from an external system connected to the digital signal processor. The microprocessor is capable of sending a user identification signal to the external system so that the external system is able to verify the identity of the user. The external system encrypts and compresses the requested digital data before sending it to the digital signal processor and microprocessor. The microprocessor and digital signal processor decrypt and decompress the digital data before displaying the data on a display device.
