ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for the high-speed transverse severing of sheets from a running web utilizing interacting blades carried by counter-rotating shafts, with wrap around and retention of the web on one shaft. The blade on the other shaft has a shaped surface which defines an epitrochoid profile along its entire length. The blade on the one shaft has a straight cutting edge which accurately engages an opposed cutting edge defined by the intersection of said shaped surface and the outer peripheral surface of said blade.
