A process by which an isocyanate can be stably produced for long in high yield without using phosgene. It is free from various problems encountered in prior-art techniques. The process for producing an isocyanate is characterized by subjecting a carbamic acid ester to decomposition reaction in the presence of a compound having an active proton and a carbonic acid derivative.
