ABSTRACT This invention is a system for monitoring changes in load on mechanical rockbolts used for ground support in underground mines. It is intended to serve as a safety device to provide warning of stress changes or impending ground failure. It consists of a series of Belleville washers, or disc springs, mounted on the protruding end of a rockbolt. A linear relationship exists between the amount of flattening of the Belleville washers and the load change. The unique aspect of this system is the device used to indicate the amount of flattening, and hence, the load change. Two alternatives for load indicators are presented, namely RBM1 and RBM2, which are distinct variations on the same principal of reflecting a change in the height of the stack of washers as the load changes. RBM1 uses the number of threads required to reset the spring-loaded device back to its original position, to quantitatively measure load change. RBM2 is intended to qualitatively reveal that changes have occurred, to serve as a warning device.
