Calculated gastric residual volumes used to monitor gastric emptying are limited by poor sensitivity and do not distinguish the components of the retained enteral formula from the large volume of naturally occurring endogenous secretions. The present invention relates to the methods of measuring the dietary formula concentration, gastric residual volume, and volume of gastric content in the stomach. In particular, the methods enable more accurate values to be calculated for the above mentioned parameters and can be clinically used to determine patient tolerance.
