ABSTRACT This invention is an emergency signal warning system to detect the sirens of emergency vehicles and to provide a warning signal. The system of the invention detects the sound signals varying in frequency in a predetermined manner over a predetermined frequency range. The system includes a source of input signals which are converted from analog to digital. A digital signal processor processes and stores the output of the converter into groups of predetermined numbers of bits. An output representative of a characteristic of the signal at the source of the input signal corresponding to a predetermined number of said groups is produced. An alarm is produced when a predetermined pattern of variations of successive outputs occur in a predetermined time interval.
