The invention relates to method and device for improving the link configuration speed of high-latency links, such as circuit switched links or satellite links, that use chatty protocols, which require sequential configuration phases, such as standard PPP in accordance with RfC 1661. In the initial link configuration phase, a standard LCP packet is sent out, followed by at least one masked packet that will be discarded silently by a peer operating in accordance with the standard protocol, but whose contents will be processed by a peer operating in accordance with the invention. The initial standard LCP packet produces compatibility with the standard protocol, whereas the sending of masked packets containing configuration information (PAP, CHAP, ICPC, etc.) allows two peers operating in accordance with the invention to accomplish the configuration phases in parallel, such that a link can be configured and ready to transmit network level packets, such as 1P packets, much more quickly than with the standard protocol, such as PPP.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif pour améliorer la vitesse de configuration de liaisons à temps d'attente important, par exemple des liaisons commutées par circuit ou des liaisons par satellite qui utilisent des protocoles de dialogues et nécessitent des phases de configuration séquentielles, par exemple la norme PPP selon RfC 1661. Dans la phase initiale de configuration de liaison, un paquet LCP (procédure de liaison) standard est envoyé, suivi par au moins un paquet masqué qui sera abandonné de manière silencieuse par un homologue fonctionnant conformément au protocole standard mais dont le contenu sera traité par un homologue fonctionnant selon l'invention. Le paquet LCP standard initial produit une compatibilité avec le protocole standard, tandis que les paquets masqués contenant les informations (PAP, CHAP, ICPC, etc.) permettent à deux homologues de fonctionner conformément à l'invention pour réaliser les phases de configuration en parallèle, de sorte qu'une liaison puisse être configurée et soit prête à transmettre des paquets au niveau du réseau, par exemple des paquets IP, de façon nettement plus rapide qu'avec le protocole standard, par exemple PPP.
