To provide a valve system for an engine, in which a valve stem for an engine valve is slidably fitted in a guide cylinder provided in a cylinder head, and a rocker arm rockable in interlocking with rotation of a cam shaft is interlocked with the valve stem, characterized by preventing the occurrence of local wear, galling, and the like in the guide cylinder, thereby improving the reliability. A lifter 102 or 103 is interposed between a rocker arm 100 or 101 and a valve stem 86 or 90. The lifter 102 or 103 is formed into a cylindrical shape with its bottom closed and having a diameter larger than an outside diameter of the valve stem 86 or 90. The lifter 102 or 103 is fitted in a lifter housing 95 or 96 in such a manner as to be slidable in the axial direction of the valve stem 86 or 90. The lifter housing 95 or 96 is fixed to a cylinder head 15R.
