The present invention relates to a veneer cutting machine used for cutting wood veneer coming from a veneer lathe in a direction transverse to the veneer travel. The cutting machine comprises a blade-supporting beam (1) extending transversely across the veneer to be cut and having a blade (2) mounted thereon, the blade-supporting beam performing in a controlled manner a reciprocatory stroke in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the veneer, and a movable anvil (4) aligned to coincide with the beam with the blade mounted thereon, whereby the veneer (5) to be cut is passed via the gap remaining between said coinciding members. According to the invention, the blade (2) is mounted on the blade-supporting beam in a manner allowing the blade to tilt in the downstream travel direction of the veneer and the anvil (4) is arranged to move at the cutting point in the same direction and at the same speed with the veneer (5) being cut. The arrangement is capable of preventing all factors that could impede the travel of the veneer being cut.
