Le procédé consiste: - à établir une corrélation entre, d'une part, la teneur en phosphate alcaline d'une série de sols de référence dont l'activité biologique est jugée satisfaisante et, d'autre part, une autre caractéristique physique et/ou chimique de cette série de sols de référence, par exemple la surface interne de ces sols, - à mesurer la teneur en phosphatase alcaline et ladite autre caractéristique du sol objet de la détermination, et - à comparer les résultats desdites mesures à la corrélation établie à partir des sols de référence.
