The concentration of xenon, in a medical gas mixture of xenon as an active component with a known composition of oxygen and, optionally, nitrogen and/or helium recirculating through a medical device (103) in which carbon dioxide is introduced into the mixture, is monitored by removal (135, 133) of carbon dioxide downstream of the medical device (103) and subsequently passing the carbon dioxide-free gas through an ultrasonic gas analyser (143) upstream of the medical device. The gas analyzer determines the xenon concentration by measuring the time delay between transmission of an ultrahigh frequency ultrasonic pulse of at least 100 kHz axially through the sample chamber from a location at one end thereof and reflection of said pulse axially from the other end of the sample chamber back to said location. An analyser of novel construction is disclosed.

La présente invention concerne la surveillance de la teneur en xénon d'un mélange gazeux médical de xénon, composant actif, avec une composition connue d'oxygène, et éventuellement d'azote et/ou d'hélium, en recirculation dans un dispositif médical (103). Du gaz carbonique est introduit dans le mélange au niveau de ce dispositif. La surveillance se fait par retrait (135, 133) de gaz carbonique en aval du dispositif médical (103) puis passage du gaz privé de son gaz carbonique au travers d'un analyseur de gaz à ultrasons (143) en amont du dispositif médical. Pour évaluer la teneur en xénon, l'analyseur de gaz mesure le délai entre, d'une part l'émission d'une impulsion d'ultrasons à fréquence ultra-haute d'au moins 100 kHz axialement au travers de la chambre d'échantillon depuis un point à l'une de ses extrémités, et d'autre part la réflexion de cette impulsion axialement depuis l'autre extrémité de la chambre d'échantillon jusqu'au point considéré. L'invention concerne également un analyseur construit selon ce principe.
